Long time no see!

Three months since my last post :O!

There's no reason to hide it, apart from being tied down with Jan exams, it's basically down to laziness.

It's rather hard to recall what had happened a month or two ago but I'll give it my best shot ^^. For Christmas there were the annual friends and family visit rounds which your parents sort of forced u to come along. When I was young I used to find it extremely boring but as you grow up you learn to just accept it =).

Apart from that there was a Christmas youth gathering at Dan's house. Everyone brought a dish along - sort of like potluck - which amounted to a licence to feast on junk food haha. I brought some mini vegi spring rolls but apparently it tasted of cheese? Don't ask me but it's most likely because it's kind of cold by the time I arrived =P. Ordered to bring masks but a few of us forgot so there was a frantic workshop to improvise on the spot. Hannah offered to finish mine for me - with a sinister motive of making it look bad xD - but it turned out to be quite funky! Nail varnish wasn't such a good idea as Enoch found out lol. I'm happy to say that apart from cutting out the shape and sticking on a glittery Christmas tree there wasn't much work for me at all.
-------------------------------------------------------

F1 in Schools ------ The UK Nationals were held on the 10th and 11th Jan. Our team set off about four on Sat morning and it was tough I have to say. We took Callum down to the school and the juniors were already there. Mr. Petit and Gilchrist weren't even there yet! And there was an extra trainee teacher who came with us of the name Mr. Thomas if I remember correctly (he was only with us for about a fortnight or so).

One thing us boys could not comprehend was why on earth it was necessary for the girls to bring suitcases and pillows with them for just two days and a night away. And it doesn't stop there! One of the suitcases was luminous pink -.-

We were among one of the first teams to arrive that morning and we were asked to queue outside the pit areas on grounds of health n safety since they were still scrambling to set up the last remaining boards. Gosh was I amazed to see Denford there. Accordingly to Caijing he was only in Singapore a few days before sorting out venues for the subsequent years. He recognised us and came over for a quick chat and was quite shocked that we knew about his stay in Singapore. The helpfulness of internatinoal friends! The dodgem arena was already open so the lot of us forked out £4 for some last minute fun. Holly was plain dangerous - she didn't know u're not supposed to bump into someone else head-on which rendered Chucky and Sion unlucky ^^.
Everything apart from racing was done on the day for our team which was a sort of relief really - get the awkward part out of the way first. The presentation was the best we've ever done in all honesty and the judges seemed very impressed. The racing however let us down big time - our car weighed 70 grams and u can imagine... 1.189 secs but that still beats our regional car by a thousandth which weighed 55g exact XD. We came back empty-handed but there are wins and losses in life =P. The new UK champions is Velocity/Team Velocity - one of the two since one was called Velocity and the other Team Velocity.

Some serious improvements for Sep is needed!
-------------------------------------------------------

Turning 18 really didn't register for me. U know being 17 one day before and turning 18 the day after doesn't automatically mean u suddenly grow up so to speak. Rather I find myself looking back at the 18 years I've been breathing on the Earth. It's quite sentimental and perhaps I don't wasnt to grow up yet? Lol, only think think, we must look forward isn't that what they always say?
-------------------------------------------------------

Ok the exams were undoubtedly a cause of stress. A few were resits and a few are A2 exams for this year. I really do hope I will do good on these because it does cut a lot of stress down for the summer final exams. I thing I've noticed is that although I looked at the Chemistry modules and thought "what the heck" it's a great deal less difficult a year later; which is a reassuring thought. Also the fact that we spend more time on the new modules also helps. It's useless sending us in for the exams when we're just "half a bucket full of water". The next few months I'll have to really knuckle down and be very prepared.

In terms of uni application I've been rejected by Cam but received conditional offers for the other four. Imperial looks to be my firm choice and her condition is set at: A Maths (including all six individual modules), A Chemistry and A Biology. The others are AAB respectively. Edinburgh I eliminated due to the distance and its ranking for chemical eningeering. Deciding between Bath and UCL as my insurance choice was a tough decision because Bath has a better Chemical Engineering department than UCL. However UCL has a higher ranking than Bath so it was a internal struggle of "rep" or "practicality". Every engineering applicant I've met on interview days say back away from UCL; engineering applicants say the opposite. Indeed the department at UCL is quite shabby when I visited them for the open day.

In the end I chose Bath as my insurance choice. If I'd be under a lot of financial stress living in London and studying in an inferior department would it be worth it to spend so much money in the next four years? Furthermore, would the rewards be any much greater if I have studied at UCL? There's no argument that UCL is prestigious but UCL's reputation is mainly built upon her academic/non-science areas. Employers' ears will easily pickup 'UCL' but it's probably better to opt for 'quality' education in the subject with a good studying environment and most importantly an enjoyable time in ur uni years.

Work hard, get the grades and I wouldn't have to care about the insurance! Jiayou!

It was snowing a fortnight ago =) here are some pics.

Going to the NEC in Jan!

Wayhey! We are through to the Nationals! NEC 10-11th here we come! =) Sure had fun Pay Herng and cheers for the gd luck wish Farah ;).

Altogether three teams were allowed to go through and they are: winner of 11-14 age group, winner of 14-19 age group and overall winner. We took the credit for winning the 14-19 age group as well as the fastest R-type of the day. 1.209 secs. Haha I know I know, it still leaves a lot to be desired. That's a CRAWL. It is at least 2 tenths of a second slower than our previous car o.O - well the axles weren't drilled square, only two out of the four wheels were touching the track at any given time. XD, Farah I should try some of ur suggestions.

So the day started off like this =).. Everyone was in school by 8.15am and busied ourselves with the new team shirts. They only arrived 5 in the afternoon the day before and I have to say they've done a good job with it. Well they'd better since half the amoint of our expenses was spent on the shirts... 200 odd quid! Embroidering the shirts doesn't actually cost much but it's setting up the graphics in digital format. The shirts fitted us quite well and as you know the girls were fussing over minor details. That reminds me Stacey forgot to get facepaint from Sainsbury's even though Holly's logo stencil was ready haha. We ordered an extra shirt for Callum in year 10 who isn't in the team but came along just for the experience, he seems to have enjoyed it =). Then there was a slight hick-up where we couldn't find any CFD slides on the powerpoint.. so Nathan and me dug through the pendrive and pasted before we set off. After loading all the gear we needed we finally set off at 9.15 - 15mins to cover 20 miles, which I thought was impossible given a Ford Transit minibus, but Mr. Gilchrist proved me wrong =).

On our journey I was seriously dreading this presentation ordeal. Not only was it just finished in less than half an hour ago but we didn't even have the slightest practise. The funny thing was we were given the timetable with our name next to the earliest possible verbal presentation time, while we were still setting up. Sigh... what could we do!? At least the spec sheet was completed beforehand, good Lord for that. The welcoming ceremony then ensued and there were about 20 teams at the event. Dave Howes was the speaker as usual introducing a new rule where the Best Engineered Car award was judged by an additional panel of judges; which meant that we were judged in four areas compared to the normal three. Hmmm... dunno if this is a one-off or not?

Cars:

This is so cool! haha

Cool e-portfolio display

Stands:

Once the prep-talk was over, the stand was set up and race car was handed in we frantically searched for a power socket for a quick practise. Turned out there was one right outside the toilets, *rolls eyes* and all we had time for was 30 seconds before being summoned. Ppl going back and forth seem to enjoy the scene haha.

Once in the presentation room, which was upstairs in a glass see-through office, we fumbled about with the projector connections. Finally got there in the end and it was 5 intense minutes. We sort of figured out which slides we were to say according to the stated role and it was ok but somewhat lacked depth. Well the judges seem pretty impressed with the 3D printed wheels occupied with examining them so that may have helped haha. I think the main thing is to account for ur reasoning for anything u do from which company u approached to how u came to decide on the final car. Because there it floor-to-ceiling glass, we could see our teachers squinting downstairs out of the corner of our eyes lol - mixed feelings haha. Walking down those stairs was so refreshing ^^, then made a beeline for the tuck shop spending our £3 vouchers.

We had a notification saying that we may have breach a rule concerning the chord of the front wing. Their case was that "it isn't clearly marked on the car", but there were stickers as well as the orthographic drawing! Hmmm.. we left it at that. The engineering judging soon followed and we had to account for everything that contributes to our car design. Me and Sion were discussing the aerodynamics, Nathan the machining, Holly and Stacey the decal application. The guy who was with Sion and me began talking about the Bloodhound SSC project, of which Swansea uni plays a big role in the aerodynamics, after the formal side of things. The project aims to set a new land speed record after a decade back in 1998 and can read more about it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/3244185/Bloodhound-SSC-British-supercar-designed-to-break-world-land-speed-record-unveiled.html. In the end they seemed content ^^ and also gave out Swansea uni prospectuses. Portfolio judging was some 10 mins later led by a different group of judges and that too flowed smoothly - I mean what can be worse than the presentation? Well with that done it's another 3 hours before our racing! They have to do the D-types first - then it was wandering and socialising ^^.

Team 'Dash' from Fitzalan High School

Team 'Scorch' and Team 'The 6 Pistons' from Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive

Team N-Gage, love their name =)... but can't remember the school name =P

Team Dragon from Dyffryn Taf, they forced us to wear their badge! XD haha

Some of the random stuff boredom can do to u:

Racing started at 2pm and it was quite nerve-racking. It was the first instance we get to test the car and there had been problems with the axle-bearing assembly. As did for the team we raced against prompting them to use stock wheels. There were no automatic races - they had been phased out. They reckon that u can deduct the reaction time from the total finishing time and it would still give a value for the run time. So 4 reaction races! Really did hope the fishing line guides would bring about an improvement. We won the first and fourth in terms of reaction time (our fastest reaction 0.175) and won all four in terms of actual race times. Not bad =P. But considering the fastest run-time without reaction is 1.209... there seriously need some improvement. Yep, the R-type racing was the last of the racing and after that everyone just hanged around waiting for the awards ceremony.

Head to head!

Teachers, Nathan and me were sitting in the ceremony thinking that there was no way we would be allowed through since we had already done so last season. It's one of those politics games where the organisers favour new teams to feel the whole experience. That preconception turned out to be false. We won the 14-19 age group gaining the chance to defend the UK title =). For the complete list of awards and their winners go to: http://www.f1inschools.co.uk/news--dash-to-victory-in-south-wales.html

Team Dragon and Team Blaze following the awards ceremony, we shall meet again at the NEC =).

Pack up and then McDonald's! That dairy McFlurry did kinda make me feel sick haha. The year 10s decided to have a burping contest started off by the girls! I agree with what Nathan said - we feel old. Haha however we tried to make Holly act more girly it just didn't work XD.

More pics of the team will be uploaded when I get hold of them from Mr. Gilchrist's cam. Keep checking!

Oh yea, Pay Herng, Garry hasn't turned up for his lessons for weeks now... dunno why and what he is doing at the moment. =/ A second time he has dropped out of sixth form now. Hope to hear from him soon. I shall discuss it with u when u're on msn.

Regionals Tomorrow!

The South Wales Regionals is finally here once again! Will begin at 9.00am at the Welsh Waterfront Museum in Swansea. About half an hour's drive away from school. Let's hope that there'll be no 10-ton lorry trying to do a U-turn through the central reservation on the M4, as one did so and overturned today. =/ Both sides traffic blocked... what was the driver thinking?

It feels quite saddening to say that it'll be the last regional for me. Well one must move on. So the team for this season comprises 2 sixth formers namely Nathan and me as well as 3 year 10s. See the team photos below!

from left: Stacey, Nathan, me, Sion, Holly

from left: Stacey, Holly, me, Sion, Nathan

Garry Hughes for those who have met him is supposed to be in the team as well. He rejoined sixth form but for some reason left again a few weeks ago... meaning we're down to five persons. Shame really... he's the life and spirit of the team through some of the random and funny comments he makes XD..

It has been rather busy for the last four days. Had to finish practically 15 pages of portfolio in that time, and I must add it doesn't help but challenge my EQ when some walk around arms crossed while others are up to the neck with work.. not forgetting the presentation. It was just finished today! It's pushing the limits to the meaning of last-minute-job. At least the cars are all assembled and ready to go after a bit of struggle with the bearings =P. We will have to freestyle on the spot during the presentation. The dread of fiasco that envelops me XD. 5 mins though.. which escalates to 8 for nationals and 12 at WCs.. provided we do go through... :S

By the way, Holly is organising facepainting haha. She was thinking of stenciling our logo on people's cheeks for those willing and trusting enough for her to do it. Cough. Cough. =) It's a good form of advertising though, not charging anything for it lol.

Long story cut short it'll be the first instance we get to test our fresh design. :S nervous. Drag is ok. Will need all the good luck we can get tomorrow. And I do hope they have a full-size track this year! Last year's regional venue was so small that a 2m chunk of the track was forced to be put aside. Hence whatever times the teams had at the event couldn't be officially recognised.

Shall be fun!

A lot of travelling!

Time to update a bit on things. It’s Children in Need day today…but sigh! There was no throwing wet sponges at teachers or all the wacky activities we’d usually have to raise money for the charity during a 3 hour long assembly! Reason? Since it was school inspection week last week the head didn’t want kids psyched up in anticipation if something like this was held. Haha but it’s not cheap if I remember correctly £3 per sponge…

It’s been quite busy for me in the past week due to uni open days. Open day in the title of the welcoming letter but it’s another term for interviews o.O. Lol it could have been worse I’m grateful that it’s not in small print further down the page =P. From what my seniors have told me there are too main types of interviews: namely formal and informal.

The formal ones are, important as the name implies… used by unis to explicitly help with their selection process and it’s like every move you make on the day will have an effect on whether you get an offer or not. Talk about pressure! Secondly the informal ones are more or less a confident booster for the unis. They’re pretty sure you can meet their conditions and whatnot from your UCAS form and is just an additional step to increase their chance of giving you the offer and you accepting the offer. It’s funny see, statistics convey that students who actually visit the uni will be more likely to end up going there if offered a place… a simple and overlooked thing =).

Hmm, formal or informal, there seemed to be a common recurring theme in a 20-30 min interview. They want to know whether or not you know what you’re in for. Not so much what the course contain, although you cannot be ignorant, rather how you came to decide on the course and the uni in question. lols, so from my limited experience, the following questions are most certainly going to be asked at an interview:

- Why have you chosen so and so?
- What is so and so?
- How will studying so and so prepare you for society?
- Why have you chosen this uni?

It can be a bit startling to be confronted with these since like the majority of candidates you would normally anticipate knowledge based questions. They are simple but require some thought which should come naturally if you are serious and clear with why you are applying in the first place. And again, why would they bother wasting time to ask you knowledge based questions while this will speak for itself in the following August? (except Oxbridge, of course =.=) Either way the interview process is essentially a way to ‘weed’ out obsessed applicants who know, presumably, half the course before it even started or those who do not have a clear direction with where they’re heading. Most important they want to know you as a person. ^_^

There are a few definite no-nos the interviewer at Bath highlighted from his experience at the end of my session yesterday, wish this info will be of help to you guys! Regurgitating the introductory sentence for the subject you are applying for from the uni’s website will only make it apparent that you do not know why you are there. Need to do some additional research about the subject for instance recent developments etc. as well as familiarise yourself with the uni’s profile. Second pit answer is ‘my parents encouraged me to do so and so’ and it’s fairly obvious for the same reason. =) As an interesting note some people take weather at open days into consideration when deciding if they accept or decline an offer. Hmm ~.~”

Enough of blabber! Yep so I went down London for my first interview last Wednesday. 3 hour journey was not fun! >< …and that’s only outward XD. So had to leave at 5am in the morning in order to arrive by 11.30 – had to allow for congestion in London =/. My dad and I took turns driving and it would be undoubtedly much more relaxing to have caught a train and I could go down by myself (there isn’t much faith yet in my driving ^_^)… but since I’ve only been notified of the open day a week in advance, ticket prices of £160 for a return o.O. Shocker! …contrast with fact that you can get a first class ticket for the same journey a month earlier with a price of £20. Time is money has never sounded more truthful in my phrase book =).

So after we reached London my dad went off to visit my aunt and I caught the tube to South Kensington. I didn’t realise Hyde Park was next door to Imperial! Haha, barely had the time to register this I was greeted with the sight of 500 odd people gathered around the main entrance. The fact that they were 90% asian wasn’t the focal point in fact I was more concerned whether they were all here for interview XD. Turned out that it was a fire drill. Huge sigh of relief ah! 你知不知道!lol. The open day group was around 40. Thank God! The annual student intake for ChemEng is 120 here. There would be around 5 more of these open days until June next year. So 1 in 2 chance of getting an offer this time round.

Once everyone had arrived we were given a small introduction sorted into four groups and given timetables for the day. Interviews and tours of department were alternating for differing groups to fit the schedule in. You know, I can’t agree more with what an overseas applicant from Brunei said at Bath yesterday, she attended an open day earlier before: there are a lot of Asians at Imperial. From the few overseas applicants I've had the chance to talk to, most told me that they've completed GCSE equivalent in their own country before coming to stay at a boarding school in UK for A-Levels.

The facilities are really nice here, fair play to them. Especially for the chemical engineering department where they actually have a process plant set up, which is rare since most opt out doing so due to maintenance costs. Well they are right in saying you learn more with hands-on experience. =) There is also one such facility at Bath among the few who do have it. However it’s no comparison to Imperial’s =P. Okay accommodation wise, both Imperial and Bath are relatively new although it’d be slightly more expensive in London. Both require that that you move out after the first year and find your own accommodation. Not the most convenient but the unis respectively have contracts with private sector housing arrangements so it’s at least a bit less daunting. A funny thing I’ve picked up is that it costs more off-campus at Imperial while it’s cheaper at Bath… I suppose it does make sense.

Not a lot more to say for Imperial except that the majority of applicants who attended attended private schools. Gosh did I feel so out of place among them haha. Oh well. And Imperial have increased their entry requirements this year due to the high number of applicants to AAA -.- bringing it level with Oxbridge. Coupled with the feeling that I flunked the interview the chance of being made an offer is quite slim… *苦笑*

It was a formal one but it wasn’t a stern why-should-I-offer-you-a-place-你-哪-位-啊 type of affair. More or less a chat to see whether you’re suitable for the course and not a lot difference with the informal one I had at Bath yesterday. But I am so grateful that mentioning F1inSchools on my UCAS form is such a good topic for interviewers to begin on – ‘application of science to solve everyday problems...’ (A)? lol. Remember I said they don’t focus on knowledge based questions? That’s true to a certain point and they usually test your analytical skills i.e. I was questioned whether or not a small scale F1 model F1 teams test in their wind tunnels would accurately represent fluid flow during a race. My answer was babbling along the lines of: since there are enclosed sidewalls in the wind tunnel, the relative size of the car will have an effect on the airflow interacting with the sidewalls. In the outside world this force is negligible since there is no ceiling as such…

Don’t know if this is what he was looking for ^_^ at least I’ve been entertaining if I’m wrong. XD

The trip to Bath was eventful thanks to a shortage of sign posts. The uni is placed at the top of the mountain reminiscent of a castle and only just opened in 1966 so everything is really new. A huge sports training village has been completed in 2002 for students ranging from tennis courts, badminton courts, swimming pool to gym. Basically really nice lah! Which reminds me of what everyone who paid a visit to UCL said about its campus buildings: they seem to pose a risk of falling down. Dunno whether this is true or not but will take a look myself next month. Where was I… yea… Bath is a really nice place to live with old buildings, scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere due to the area being designated as a heritage site. If I was asked to choose where I’d like to spend 4 years solely based on surroundings, Bath is the top choice… love the friendly atmosphere.

About 40 of us again. Typical student intake 70. There were less overseas applicants to Bath from what I saw and less from private schools, which is more comfortable =). Routine of events was more or less the same to last Wednesday and leaving around 4ish in the afternoon. The interviewer was a man again felt somewhat less gruelling than Imperial, hopefully I’d get an offer from Bath!

风筝

dedicated to a dispirited friend...

Credit Crunch!

:D woo finally awoken from my hibernation in the realms of blogging.

where to start! it's been at least a month and even though i say hibernation it's not due to laziness, ok minimally ^^, but in fact i've underestimated the amount of stuff that was waiting for me in dreaded september!

Ucas was one thing, if not life-drenching, this online uni application system is relatively straightforward and friendly to use but it wasn't the sort of thing you could scrape out of the way in an afternoon. I had to get my application in early by Oct 15th because of what I was applying for. The personal details and examination dates, results etc. bit is the stress free part of the ordeal but writing the personal statement is by far the most head-wrenching. =)

Perhaps i should admit that i left a decision rather late. Choosing a what to study weighing up this with that really do not get you far at all except with more doubts as to whether higher education is really worth it... but, haha of course it is! originally i considered economics but the competition is humongus as with any BA (Bachelor of Arts) course, never mind the current credit crunch - where your economists do not seem to be able to do much hmm... that brings up another interesting point - some unis offer a BSc (Bachelor of Science) degree for economics, together with BA this is the second of the two main types of degrees, so the question that really hits home is: is economics a science per se? =P

^^ in the end i've decided to do something more concrete - as in a course which gives me practical skills at the end of 3-4 years - and that's chemical engineering =P. The industry is quite wide from foodstuffs to petrochemical... hehe, if you're one of those who i confided my troubles of subject-dropping in you will be shocked to know that my final subject choices are at odds to what i originally said... XD recall that i said if i was to go into engineering maths and physics was needed, but for chemcial engineering only maths and chemistry are the essential ones. I count that as a bargain =D if you consider how hard physics is and how prevalent chemical engineers' work are in everyday life. also, you could go anywhere in the world and get a job pretty easily since the niche is small. Yea so the truth is i'm taking chemistry, maths and biology for A2.

Back to my point about personal statements, =P i've lost count of how many times we've been reminded about its importance. Though it is often the determining factor in whether u get an offer over another applicant... because unis like to see ur personality in it. So if u've made the links I couldn't begin tailoring my PS until I've decided on a course! Is it my fault? Arrrr... yes. =)

So once my reference is attached, a click of a button and off it goes ^^ no more to worry about except rejections =S. Phew =). Oh yea, student finance will need to be sorted out too =x. At least i don't have to worry about much when deadline comes in jan where it clashes with exams. Haha, Jerry is it really true leaving things to the last minute is a chinese thing?

Ok ucas narrative will end here. *as if i'm not fed up already? Hmrph...

Orz

***welcome to UK Kay. =) yeps, hope u're settling in ok, at least it's not as cold as Denmark hehe.***

Erm... gingerly passed my driving test on the 24th Sep... gingerly because patrick has taken a dislike to roundabouts =D. Why can't we have normal cross junctions? ><>
Haha and I fully appreciate the throes of high petrol costs now. XD even though international oil prices have dropped i just can't see why this isn't reflected at petrol stations - the price either remains stationary for the time being or is still rising... my father likes to give a 'very' exhaustive narrative on this lol XD.

Solution: drive slower. =X

Yep F1inSchools season is starting once again and from what remains of Blaze is Nathan and me.. though for those who was at the Melbourne WC, you will have known Garry and he has made a reappearance at school =). So the seniors Lewys, Tom, Tammy and Stacey are all off to uni. This year is gonna be Nathan, Garry and me. Haven't had much done to be honest - slacking! tut tut.

Tired night traffic making their way home while F1 engines roar away underneath the overhanging road, the spectacle of Singapore F1 was so brilliant I can't find the words to describe :D I was mesmerized at the sheer lighting - 1600 light projectors consuming 3,180,000 watts! Quite a feat! ^^, really hope they're having smth like this again in the future. Of course the highlight was Massa winning his 'tug-of war' which prompted the 100m sprint of the Ferrari mechanics down the pitlane =P. If they don't revert to the lollipop stick system I think the FIA will do it for them.

Arghhh =). Half term is coming up, a much needed rest and about time too! Of course the flurry of homework will be there. On a positive note it's fireworks soon! 5th Nov Bonfire Night!

Unitl next time everyone! Yeps I will keep on blogging xin ;)
